Ingredients

  • 1 cup Butter, salted
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 ½ - 2 tsp Maple extract
  • ½ tsp Vanilla extract
  • 3 cups AP flour
  • ½ tsp Sea salt
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar
  • Gel or powdered food coloring of your choice

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350℉. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In your mixer bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until fluffy.
  • In a separate bowl, add the flour, salt and baking powder together and whisk.
  • Back to your mixer, add in your egg and extracts. Mix again on low for a few minutes until ingredients are incorporated.
  • Still on low speed, add in your dry ingredients. Just a little at a time and mix until dough ball forms.
  • If your dough is still a little dry, take it out and work it with your hands into manageable dough balls.
  • Roll between two pieces of parchment paper until flat. We used a rolling pin with thickness rings to help us have even cookies. We did about 1/4" thick cookies.
  • Cut with your favorite cookie cutter shapes! Place onto the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes, depending on how big the cutters you are using are. You are looking for the edge just to slightly turn a golden brown color.
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet for at least 5 minutes. Move to a cookie rack there after.
  • Continue this process until you have used up all of the dough.

To make the colored powdered sugar

  • There are two ways to color the sugar. Grab your food processor.
  • Measure out 2 cups of powdered sugar, separate evenly if making multiple colors.
  • For powdered color, just all the color and sugar together in the processor and mix. Continue to add color until you get the desired color you want. I did not have powdered color so I did the gel color option listed next.
  • For gel color, add in your powdered sugar to the processor. Add in 2 drops of gel color (small ones). Process for a minute to two. The trick is to make sure you add just a little color at a time because it's gel and will clump if you do too much.
  • Continue to add a few drops at a time and then run the processor again for a few minutes. Just know with gel colors, there is a limit of no return. It will get too clumpy and not be a powder any longer. Gel colors are always going to be a lighter color versus powdered colors. I would say I added about 10-12 drops of color to achieve the green color. A little less for the pink color.
  • I placed my mixed powdered sugar out thinly on a plate for it to air dry a bit before using it on my cookies
  • Place completely cooled cookies on a cooling rack on top of a piece of parchment paper. Put a little bit of your colored powdered sugar into a sieve and lightly hit it against your hand over the top of the cookies. You can choose how much or how little to do.
  • Enjoy!
